At the Thurgood Marshall Institute, a dedicated team of social science researchers and archivists carry forward the Legal Defense Fund’s legacy of building a multiracial democracy through social science research and public education materials that inform and advance racial justice legal advocacy in the areas of criminal justice, education equity, political participation and economic justice. The Archives Department complements this work by collecting and preserving valuable LDF historical records and making them accessible to LDF staff and the public to meet the present moment in service of our vision for multiracial democracy.

“I’m proud that we have realized the vision of a Thurgood Marshall Institute at LDF. The Institute is strengthening LDF’s capacity and reach, and our ability to meet the needs of the communities we represent.”
